Gut health
Gut symptoms: when should I see a GP?
Quick answer
Occasional bloating, changes in appetite and mild gut upset are common. Some symptoms, though, should always be checked.
See a GP if symptoms are persistent or getting worse; if you’re losing weight without trying; if there’s blood in your stool; if you have a change in bowel habit that lasts more than a few weeks; or if symptoms are affecting your ability to eat, work or sleep.
For ongoing gut-brain patterns, a dietitian familiar with the gut-brain axis, or a therapist trained in gut-directed CBT or hypnotherapy, can help alongside your GP.
When to get support
Blood in your stool, unexplained weight loss, or persistent changes in bowel habit are reasons to see a GP promptly.
