Perimenopause

When should I see a menopause specialist?

Quick answer

A GP can help with most perimenopause symptoms. A menopause-informed clinician or specialist is worth seeking when symptoms are disruptive, complex, or not improving with first-line support.

Consider it if symptoms are significantly affecting your work, relationships or wellbeing; if you’re unsure whether what you’re experiencing is perimenopause; or if you’d like to discuss options and aren’t getting the answers you need.

The British Menopause Society keeps a directory of specialists, which can help if your GP is unsure. Bring a few cycles of tracked symptoms — sleep, mood, cycle changes, hot flushes — so the conversation starts with a clear picture.
