When should I see a dermatologist?

Quick answer

Most everyday skin changes settle with time and simple care. It’s worth seeing a GP or dermatologist when the picture is more persistent or distressing.

Consider booking an appointment if acne is painful, scarring, or persisting through your whole cycle despite a steady routine; if eczema is widespread, weeping, infected, or stopping you sleeping; or if a mole or patch of skin is changing in size, shape or colour.

It’s also reasonable to seek help when skin is affecting your confidence or mood, even if it looks mild to others. You don’t have to wait until it’s severe.

Bring your tracking with you — when it started, where it appears, what changed, and what you’ve already tried. A clear history helps a clinician far more than trying to remember it on the spot.

When to get support

If you notice rapid changes to a mole, a spreading rash with fever, or signs of skin infection, seek medical advice promptly.
